Tanah Lot Bali attracts thousands of tourists every day to photograph its silhouette against the setting sun. They come from far and wide and some can watch this unique place from their hotel room or while playing golf. It sits on top of rock surrounded by the Bali Sea; and today we can’t even go up the winding path and see it from the inside.
At high tide the rock is separated from the land by water; therefore priests and devotees can only set foot in it once the tide is low and lets the path to it appear. This Balinese temple too has no roof and houses only a few short Merus dedicated to sea demons. The important and most worshiped gods reside on Mt Agung, the highest mountain and this is why the Mother Temple Besakih is on its slope and is huge compared to this one.
Never the less this is a sacred temple and it was restored from falling off the crumbling cliff with the help of the Japanese government. At the bottom of the temple there is a cave that houses the holy serpent. A huge snake, the only one of its kind so we are told; we can stroke it to ask for good blessings.
In olden days the street leading to Tanah Lot was very bad, narrow and full of pot holes; even then we brought busloads of tourists to admire this unique view. Today the road is fixed and lots of hotels, home stays, eateries and of course souvenir shops have sprung up along the way. There is a golf course to the South of it; it’s permits and constructions triggered lots of discussions in Bali itself as to the extend tourism is allowed to encroach into the sacred spaces of the Balinese.
While waiting for the sun to set in Tanah Lot Bali you can sit in a café and sip on young coconut water or a cool bear. And after the splendid nature show is over you can go and watch the famous Fire Dance Ketchak on the Northern side.
The temple is said to have been build in around the 16th century by a revered Hindu saint who traveled along the shore. He was awed by the rock in the water, stayed there for a while and told the locals to build a temple for worship. The name Tanah Lot describes Land and Sea in the local language.
You can enjoy the view of Tanah Lot from a luxurious beach resort with a golf course
This temple on its rock is a uniquely Balinese sight and you have not been in Bali if you have not come to Tanah lot.
We have stayed at the beautiful Pan Pacific with golf course and lots of other amenities. There are more accommodations available in the area; we will discover and report on a next tour.
