Tabanan Bali lets you escape from what? From our busy world of information onslaught and overload that attack us everywhere. Take a rest in a small hotel and a step back in time and relax in the cooling mountains and among the most beautiful rice terraces you will still find.
We were looking to get out from the typical tourist destinations of Kuta and Denpasar and into the more rural Bali. First we traveled through Tabanan along wide and busy highways with absolutely no tourist attractions, shops and cafes until we reached quieter smaller but well maintained mountain roads and arrived at Pupuan.
It was built by and Australian who loved this part of Bali. At the age of over 80 and no one who was interested in moving this beautiful business to the next level, he sold it to and Indonesian who’s passion is antiques from all over Indonesia. And Sanda Hotel is a perfect stage to show off all these beautifully crafted pieces originating from many different places all over this rich archipelago.
We stopped by for afternoon tea with a homemade Crème Brulee or also called Flan Caramel and a pancake filled with ice cream and topped with yummy chocolate sauce.
When you are tired of lounging at the gorgeous pool, ask for the bicycles and explore the surrounding villages and the temple that is inhabited by monkeys.

When we were in Tabanan we resided at Kebun Villa
We were traveling along the rural road and all of a sudden it opens up to the most perfect rice terraces. This is the best stop for pictures and of course there is a little roadside warung or local restaurant there too. While enjoying the serene and natural environment I decided I was hungry?
“What is your specialty?” I asked somewhat skeptical. When Ayam Betutu was served it looked enticing. It is the most famous Balinese chicken dish you can get everywhere. It is cooked with plenty of traditional spices and is accompanied by Lawar a vegetable salad with peanuts and the staple rice. This chicken dish though is the best of them all.
In many restaurants it is way too hot even for me; this one on the other hand let’s one taste the different herbs without the chilly burning the tongue. This is the perfect Ayam Betutu; come here for a leisurely scrumptious lunch and a fantastic view.
Warung Tepi Sawah, Desa Belimbing, Pupuan, Tabanan Bali
This compound is off the main road, you have to turn into a little side street and drive a few meters to get to it. This accommodation already has a reputation, has won several awards from Balinese as well as foreign organizations, one of them is Tripadvisor.
This is the biggest hotel in the area with choices between individual villas and newer hotel style rooms. The architecture and interior decoration reflect traditional Balinese handicraft and art combined with modern comfort. The open restaurant and dramatic swimming pool are star attractions with vast views over rice fields.
The hotel will arrange a visit to the local monastery and nature hikes to the waterfall, if you want to explore Bali a bit more.
