Indonesia Calling Card: Top Three

Today we do not call home from our holiday hotel in Bali anymore. Indonesia calling card is easy to find and cheap if you just need it for the basics and limited time. Since this is a huge country made out of thousands of islands and lots of ocean, cards need to cover a big territory.

Then again, most people live and work in one particular area and are looking for coverage there. You are vacationing in Bali or Java or Sumatra or Lombok and of course would like to keep in touch with loved ones and maybe also want to talk to locals who offer different services . What is the best way?

It is not difficult to find the best for you; just keep in mind the vacation you are planning. Will you stay mostly in one area or move a lot? If you travel around the country it makes sense to figure out which card gives you the best coverage in all the places to visit.

What is the Best Indonesia Calling Card for You?

1. Telkomsel

is the market leader with more than 90% coverage; best choice if you travel to remote areas because it covers all provinces

2. XL4G

good speeds on the main islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok

3. IndosatIM3

good speeds on the main islands Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok

Calling cards can be easily purchased in convenience stores or their own little and specialized outlets and they will sell the best for their area. Cards have to be registered, ask the sales clerk to help you find the perfect card and package (including internet) for you and let them help you with registration and activation. Additional credits can be bought at the same outlet or at ATM machines.

Prices vary and might include a small percentage for the person to help you: You can get a SIM card for less than $1.- and internet packages 4G for about $10.- per month and of course everything in between.

Use Hotel Internet to Call

I have been living here for many years and I regularly connect with my family and friends abroad, especially in Switzerland. Many years ago, when I worked for a tour operator and traveled, we communicated via expensive fixed line phones and telex. The world has come a long way and has become a lot more efficient in connecting faraway places, it is amazing!

Most of you probably use a modern communication device with plenty of apps. Internet calls via Skype and WhatsApp can be done easily with most newer gadgets, just download the app. I like Skype or similar apps because you can just login to your account, without having to deal with a new number or code. Depending on the speed of the internet video calls might be possible … or not; at least right now in 2016, since internet in Indonesia is limited but we are catching up.

Before you purchase an Indonesia calling card decide what territory it needs to cover and what services you need; just phone calls or internet too.
