In surfer circles, Canggu Bali is whispered from ear to ear as an insider’s spot. And amazingly we also found an old world luxurious hotel tugged away in a tropical garden. This is the beach where you get away from tiered same old Kuta. Here the waves are strong; it is a good practice ground for strong surfers. The sand is black and it is not a safe family or a kid friendly sunbathing and playing in water kind of beach like Sanur.
Lately more and more different accommodation have sprung up here. You can find villas and apartments for short and long term stay.
Although Kathy and I are no surfers, we decided to follow the motorcycles with their odd looking hooks on one side to carry around a surfboard. From the main road between Tanah Lot and Kuta there are many signs pointing toward the beach. The narrow but good roads wind through rice fields and typical farmer villages. And the closer to the beach you get the more small hotels, villas, restaurants and shops you pass.
At last we came to the end of the one road and it opened up to a big parking space with restaurants on one side, a surf board renting shop on the other and lots of waves and a narrow strip of black sand in front. It was January and windy with some sunshine. Some action was in the water that day most of the visitors though opted for a rest in a café.
The biggest of them all looks like THE spot to hang out on comfortable day beds covered in typical ikat (hand woven) materials. The customers are from all over the world and the drinks are clod bear and coke, smooth ice cream, fat French fries and a special Barbeque for Australian Day. I am speaking about the Old Man’s Bar and Restaurant at Batu Bolong Beach Canggu.
We also found a beautiful luxurious and romantic hotel right on the beach; the special place to relax and enjoy life. There are plenty of houses and apartments for rent for short term and long term. Small and bigger grocery stores are all around and of course eateries for all budgets and tastes. We (together with my brother, family and friends) stayed a little bit to the south, at Eden Villas at Seminyak
A bit to the north there is another up and coming beach, still with black sand and a heaven for surfers. The first striking thing you see when strolling down the narrow lane is a prominent large black Balinese temple. On the beach there are many big well organized eateries with rows and rows of tables and chairs. Here you also finds surf and cloth shops and of course accommodation is not far either.
Canggu Bali offers two black sand beaches with impressive waves, a surfer’s dream. In order to make their holidays even more enjoyable, the Balinese have opened all kinds of shops, accommodations and support for you the passionate wave rider.
Canggu Club caters to young and old. There is a swimming pool with rides for kids. Tennis players find the three courts quite good and every body loves trampoline, bowling and pool tables. Here is a short video we made when we visited.
